L to R: Tucker Thomson, Alex Johnson, Hunter Summers, Gwen Powell
On Monday, May 29th, four sixth graders from Easton Valley competed in the annual 6th Grade Math Bee at the AEA (Area Education Agency) in Bettendorf. Due to cuts that the state is making, this was the very last Math Bee to be held. Tucker Thomson, Hunter Summers, Alex Johnson, and Gwen Powell were the four students representing Easton Valley. Thirty teams from the area were in attendance including schools of all sizes.
Five Pleasant Valley teams finished in the top ten. Other schools rounding out the top ten included: two North Scott teams, St. Paul, DeWitt Central, and Delwood. Easton Valley finished 13th just behind West Liberty in a tie-breaker situation. Other teams competing and finishing in the 14-30 spots included: Northeast, six Muscatine teams, a North Scott team, Trinity Lutheran, Wilton, a PV team, Calamus-Wheatland, Bellevue, Bellevue Marquette, Durant, and Camanche.
Some of the math included: number systems, expressions and equations, geometry, statistics and probability, and ratio and proportional relationships. Gwen was our leading scorer for the day pulling in 34 points.
